Some of the most important forest cover areas in Indonesia lie in the country’s East Kalimantan Province. This region has just under 7 million ha of tropical forests which are home to a wealth of globally significant biodiversity, and that support numerous indigenous and other local communities. More than 10% of East Kalimantan’s remaining forest cover was lost over the past decade, due primarily to the expansion of oil palm plantations, timber plantations, and mining.
East Kalimantan Province
Indonesia’s ER program aligns with East Kalimantan’s low-emission development approach, implemented through strategies and action plans that build on the province’s strong leadership in addressing climate change. It is designed to incentivize reduced deforestation and forest degradation in the province through sustainable forest management activities, including forest licensing improvements, strengthening forest management capacity, and promoting community-based planning. The program also focuses on addressing the province’s main drivers of deforestation and forest degradation through improved forest governance, protection and rehabilitation of peatland areas, and support for alternative livelihoods and community forestry. This is Indonesia’s first jurisdictional-level ER program, serving as an example for other subnational governments in the country. View Country Profile
